What Are the Benefits of a Touch Dimmer?
Flexibility to Control Your Lighting
With the touch of a button, you decide how much lighting fills your room at every point in time. When it’s time to take a nap, you can reduce the light at your bedside lamp to help you sleep better. If you need more active lighting and ambiance, you can adjust the dimmer for brighter light.
Light Bulbs Last Longer
Lesser energy consumption reduces wear and tear on your home lighting source, especially LED lights. Touch dimmers make your bulb last longer, saving you the cost of regular maintenance and replacement.
Let’s put some numbers to this: If you dim your bulb by 50% consistently, it can last up to 50% longer. So instead of a meager 5-6 months, you can see your light bulb working for approximately 12 months.
How To Install a Touch Dimmer For Your Metal Table Lamp
Follow these DIY steps to install a new touch dimmer for your light table lamp.
Fixing a touch dimmer is easy, and you should be done in no time. You should stop by the store and pick up tools and materials for the installation, including wire connectors, electrical tapes, screwdrivers, and a voltage tester.
1. Choose Your Dimmer
The first thing you need to do is choose a touch dimmer that best suits your metal table lamp. Here, you need to answer three questions:
- What type of light works best with the dimmer?
- How many switches control the light fixture?
- Can the dimmer support the planned wattage? That is, how many bulbs would I connect to the dimmer?
For instance, if you select an incandescent dimmer for an LED light, it will not work, and even when it does, it will definitely not be the best lighting for your home. Also, overloading the dimmer with too many bulbs can make your lights flicker because it cannot support the wattage you need.
2. Turn off Power
Next, you need to switch off all power sources, so you don’t get electrocuted. Use the voltage tester to confirm there’s no power in your circuit breaker box.
Next, remove the screws holding the switch to the wall plate and then disconnect all the wires carefully.
3. Connecting New Dimmer and Replacing Wall Plate
Step 1. Cut off any twisted ends.
Step 2. Connect the dimmer’s ground wire to the green/bare copper wire in the wall box. Twist the ends of both wires and peg them with a wire connector nut.
Step 3. If you are fixing a three-way dimmer switch, connect the pegged common wire to the black dimmer wire. Next, fix the dimmer’s traveler wires to the remaining wires in the wall box.
Step 4. For a single-pole dimmer switch, twist the ends of each black dimmer wire and house wire to connect them.
Step 5. Mount the dimmer to your wall.
4. Turn Power Back on and Test Dimmer
Now, it’s time to test your new touch dimmer. Fit all the wires into the wall socket and tighten all the screws to keep the box in place. Attach the wall plate and turn the power back on for your table lamp.
